Frequently Asked Questions

Everything about the game in one page.

The basics

What is Quotedle?

Quotedle is a free daily word puzzle. Each day you see the beginning of a famous quote and a bank of words. Your job is to pick the final five words of the quote and place them in the correct order.

How many guesses do I get?

Six. After each guess, every word in your attempt lights up green, yellow, or gray. Use that feedback to refine your next guess.

What do the colors mean?

Green means the word is in the answer and in the correct position. Yellow means the word is in the answer but not at this position. Gray means the word is not in the answer.

When does a new puzzle appear?

At midnight in your local time zone. Everyone playing on the same calendar day (in your time zone) will see the same puzzle.

Is there a practice mode?

Yes. After you finish the daily puzzle, you can play unlimited practice puzzles. They do not count toward your streak.

Streaks and stats

How does the streak work?

Your streak is the number of consecutive days you have solved the daily puzzle. If you miss a day, the streak resets to zero. Solving a puzzle on any guess (1 through 6) counts toward the streak.

Where are my stats stored?

In your browser’s localStorage, on your device. They never leave your device and we cannot see them. If you clear your browser’s site data or play from a different browser, your stats will reset because each browser keeps its own copy.

Can I sync my stats between devices?

Not today. Adding optional sync is on the roadmap, but it is a feature that would require an account, which we have been reluctant to add.

About the puzzles

Where do the quotes come from?

We use quotes with verifiable sources: books, speeches, essays, interviews, and letters. Every quote has been checked against a primary source before it enters the set. We try to avoid misattributed quotes that float around the internet. If you find one we missed, please let us know.

Why five words?

Five words is long enough to reward thinking about sentence structure and short enough to finish a puzzle in a coffee break. Earlier versions used longer answers and playtesters found them exhausting.

Why does the word bank have extra words?

The bank includes a few distractor words alongside the five correct ones. Distractors are chosen to fit the grammar of the sentence, which makes the puzzle harder and more interesting. If the bank were just the five answer words, the puzzle would collapse to a reorder-five-words exercise.

Can I suggest a quote?

Yes. Email a quote plus a source to [email protected]. Please include the author’s name and the book or speech it came from.

Sharing

How does the share button work?

When you finish a puzzle, press Share. A spoiler-free grid is copied to your clipboard, showing your guesses as colored tiles only. You can paste it into a chat or social media. The grid does not include the quote or the answer, so you will not spoil anything for other players.

Can I share on a specific social network?

The share button copies the grid to the clipboard, which works everywhere. From there you can paste the result into any app, including Twitter/X, Threads, Bluesky, Discord, iMessage, or WhatsApp.

Technical

Does Quotedle work on mobile?

Yes. The game is designed mobile-first and runs in any modern browser.

Does it work offline?

Not yet. Once the page is loaded, you can keep playing without a connection, but the first load requires you to be online. Adding a service worker for fully offline play is on the roadmap.

Is there a dark mode?

The site is dark by default. We chose dark because the game is typically played briefly and the dark UI reduces glare. A light-mode option may appear in the future.

Is Quotedle accessible?

The game is designed to work with a keyboard alone and uses non-color cues for feedback (position in the grid and in the share output). We continue to refine screen-reader support. If you run into an accessibility issue, please tell us.

Ads and privacy

Why are there ads?

Ads pay for the domain and hosting, and keep the site free for everyone. Quotedle is a solo project and advertising is the only funding source.

Can I opt out of personalized ads?

Yes. Visit Google Ads Settings to control personalization, or read our privacy policy for more options.

Do you collect my data?

We do not collect personal data. See the privacy policy for details.

Still stuck?

Who do I contact for bugs or feedback?

Email [email protected]. Include a screenshot and your browser if you are reporting a bug.
